Winter Break: December 13 - January 15

12/2/2019

The Journal of Politics winter hiatus will run from Friday, December 13, 2019 through Wednesday, January 15, 2020. During this period we will not accept new manuscripts. However, the JOP will accept revised manuscripts, process incoming reviews and already-received manuscripts, and issue editorial decisions. Reviewers may login to Editorial Manager to submit their reviews during this period. If you need assistance with a manuscript or review in progress, contact the journal office at jop@usc.edu.

Winter Break: December 17 - January 22

10/23/2018

The JOP will go on Winter Break from the morning of December 17 through the morning of January 22.  During this break, we will not accept new submissions, but will continue to accept reviews and revised manuscripts.  Also during this break, the new Field Editor team will begin work.  R&Rs during this time will be handled by editors from both teams.

Book Review Essays

5/27/2018

Beginning with the October 2018 issue, the JOP's Book Review section will focus on book review essays based on multiple books instead of stand-alone reviews of single books.

Book review essays will focus on 3-4 books, organized around a common theme. Authors are encouraged to construct their essays as "critical reviews," and thus go beyond simply critiquing the books and build independent arguments.

More information on the book review essays can be found here:

Symposia in Fall 2018

5/26/2018

The Journal of Politics is starting a new Symposium section, which will include several short articles built around a particular topic.  The topics will be based on important issues (often with a real-world component) or involve retrospectives of important books.  The Symposium articles, which will be roughly half as long as the usual articles in the JOP, will be original research.

Article proposals for future Symposia will be selected via an open call (details below).  Authors will be invited (all flight/hotel expenses paid) to a one-day workshop at the University of Southern California to present their article drafts and receive feedback, and revised drafts will be editorially reviewed before they are published.  And a note summarizing the symposium process — as separate from the usual peer-review process — will appear at the bottom of the first page of each article to ensure transparency.

Each JOP Symposium will include 4 to 6 papers.

Request for Proposals

There will be two Symposia Workshops at USC in Fall 2018.  The topics will be:

(1) Race and Law Enforcement (October 30)
  • While scholarship on race and law enforcement exists, it has been dominated by sociologists and criminologists. So existing research often overlooks broader political science issues, like the nature of the state, the organization of government power, and democratic accountability & responsibility.  Paper topics are open and could include (for example) racial disparities in the use of force, the impact of police use of force on societal health & civic participation, and the democratic consequences of police militarization.

(2) Foreign Policy in the Age of Trump (December 4)
  • President Trump has had a major effect on American foreign policy during his first year and a half in office, involving international trade and investment , nuclear agreements, and relations with foreign governments. Paper topics are open and could include (for example) how the Trump presidency affects our understanding of American foreign policy in new and different ways, and investigate its effect on trade, Great Power relations, cybersecurity, and migration.

Paper proposals for either Symposium should be 1-2 pages in length, and include (a) the research question and (b) a short research design. Papers proposals can be standard normal-science (and thus the RD should include the data and methods to be used) or more conceptual in nature.

Proposals should be sent to jopsymposium@usc.edu by July 1. Decisions will be made by July 27.

If you already have papers that might fit the topic area, please include a URL or attachment. Note that said papers cannot be published or under review elsewhere.

New "Short Articles" Section

2/25/2016

The Journal of Politics is pleased to announce and begin accepting submissions for a new "Short Articles" section. This section will appear as necessary, in accordance with the volume of high-quality submissions received. Like standard articles, these brief contributions will appear in both the print and online editions of the Journal. Short paper submissions will be limited to 10 pages, double spaced -- and must follow the formatting guidelines laid out in the instructions to authors.

The Editorial Team encourages authors to submit original papers with narrower substantive focus and replications of important findings. The goal of this additional section is to promote the dissemination of ideas and findings that would otherwise be ignored because of the prioritization of novelty at general interest political science journals. In light of a growing body of research about publication bias, the Editorial Team has elected to provide authors with an opportunity to submit high-quality work that makes narrower - but critically important - contributions to existing areas of research.

The first “Short Articles” section should appear in the January 2017 issue of the Journal. Authors who have questions about the appropriateness of their submission for the short paper section are encouraged to contact the Journal at: jop@virginia.edu.

Winter Break (2015): December 20 - January 5

11/30/2015

The JOP will be on winter break between December 20 and January 5. We will not accept new submissions during this time, but we will continue to conduct editorial review and (happily) receive referee reports.
